Taking a Pause: Discovering Swedish Place Names in the USA

Let's take a little break from our series on famous Swedes in the USA and their descendants. Did you know that there are nine towns named Stockholm in the United States, four named Falun, an equal number of Uppsalas, and even a Göteborg? Beyond that, there are thousands of other places across North America that bear names given by Swedish immigrants. Simply looking at a map 


becomes a historical journey in itself—each town with a Swedish name tells a story about the people who took the leap to the great land in the west to start a new life, or about their descendants.

The state with the most Swedish place names—over two hundred, in fact—is, perhaps unsurprisingly, Minnesota, where so many Swedes settled. But looking at the entire USA, you’ll find towns with Swedish names in 41 of the 50 states.
